The voice behind Nickelodeon's bilingual cartoon heroine "Dora The Explorer" filed a lawsuit against the cable channel and parent media company Viacom for allegedly cheating her out of millions of promised revenue from residuals and merchandising. Kaitlin Sanchez, who lent her voice to the famed pre-school character since 2007, recently lost the role owing to the teen's changed voice according to a statement from Nickelodeon.
"We are not suing because they claim her voice changed... She is suing because they paid her nothing for residuals," Sanchez's attorney John Balestriere said. He further stated that Sanchez spent most of her time promoting the brand uncompensated "rather than performing as a paid actress."
Prior to landing the role of Dora Marquez in the cartoon series, the voice behind Dora was played by Kathleen Herles. No statement has been made regarding a replacement for Sanchez. It is expected that Viacom will fight the claim and vigorously protect one of its bankable franchises. Read more about the story from the links below.
Jennifer Lopez gets a relatively hefty paycheck for signing up for the American Idol panel. Reports say she's getting some $12 million plus perks for filling in the seats left vacant by Paula Abdul and recently by Kara DioGuardi. With the earlier departure of Simon Cowell, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler took up the third spot on the judge's ring to complement the only remaining original Idol judge Randy Jackson.
In another story, singer George Michael suffered a double whammy over the weekend. He smashed his Range Rover into a photo shop in north London while driving under the influence of cannabis and was subsequently charged and sentenced for an eight week jail term.
I've been tracking development for the "Thundercats" movie since 2007. The latest updates on this project is that Warner Brothers may have something slated by 2011 or 2012. But before that a little experiment is on the way via the small screen.
WB is working with Cartoon Network to launch a new Thundercats animation series. This is in partnership with Studio 4C, a leading Japanese animation firm which also worked on the "Animatrix".
It's quit conceivable that the success or failure of this re-envisioning of the cartoon classic will determine whether the Thundercats movie will see the light of day. Personally, I'm looking forward to both projects.
The Leonardo Di Caprio starrer "Inception"tops the US box office, beating the Angelina Jolie spy flick "Salt" on its opening week. With Oscar buzz and $43.5 million so far, not bad for Inception.
Have you seen the new movies? Which one do you like better? Share your review here.
The yearly Academy Awards is moving the buzz circles once again as the 2010 Oscars shines its spotlights on a total of 10 films for the best picture category, the most nominations since 1944.
This year's nominations are a curious mix of the critically acclaimed and the popular blockbusters. James Cameron's science fiction hit "Avatar" and Kathryn Bigelow's war drama "The Hurt Locker" are pitted against each other with 9 nominations including best picture and best director.
The animation "Up" is nominated for both best animation and best picture categories. Other luminaries in contention are Sandra Bullock as best actress for "The Blind Side" going up against Oscar mainstays Meryl Streep for "Julie and Julia" and Dame Helen Mirren for "The Last Station". For best actor, Morgan Freeman gets the Academy's nod for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in "Invictus", as well as George Clooney for "Up In The Air" and Jeff Bridges, who earlier won the best actor award in the Golden Globes for his role in "Crazy Heart".
The nominees for best picture are:
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
A Serious Man
Up
Up In The Air
The 82nd Academy Awards will air March 7th and will be hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.
The year 2007 does not stand out in history as much as say 1776 with the US Declaration of Independence, or 1945 with the atomic bomb destruction of Hiroshima, or for that matter the year 2000 celebrated as the turn of the millennium although some argue that 2001, said to be the first year of the 21st century, is the "actual beginning" of the new millennium.
For the most part, 2007 is as regular a year as the sun regularly rises in the morning and sets in the evening. The machinery of governments kept rolling, the expected world events kept in pace with tradition, and for certain humankind grew in numbers but also fell to disease, disaster and dreadful conflicts.
However, despite being a relatively lackluster year, 2007 had its own moments -- instances of note which, to some marks a good year, to others bode ill omen, while for the rest holds memories void of reward and relevance.
Peace Elusive
The world was in conflict in 2007 as in the years and decades previous. It's nothing new, that is to say its nothing particularly disturbing. But as in all human conflicts marked by violence, it is a matter of serious discourse.
The US campaign in Iraq continued even as hundreds died relentlessly by the works of suicide bombers all year-round. Britain, one of the pillars of the "coalition against terror" that gave the thumbs-up for the US to invade Iraq in 2003, began withdrawal of its troops off Basra. And while troop withdrawal from Iraq is the current sentiment of a vocal segment of the international community, the US (even as Bush had agreed on sending some US soldiers home during the holidays with certain limitations) is still reluctant to let go of Iraq, pointing at neighboring Iran this time as a growing threat in the region.
Tension also marked the issue of North Korea's nuclear program which started with Pyongyang's alleged nuclear tests in the last quarter of 2006. By January 2007, Japan and South Korea along with other concerned nations decried a nuclear North Korea and sought sanctions against Kim Jong-Il's regime. A month later, NoKor have committed to nuclear disarmament in exchange for aid and have since been under the watchful eye of the US and the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) all throughout 2007. Also, in August, North and South Korea signed a peace declaration which sought to establish a permanent treaty to replace the truce which led to the cessation of the Korean War back in 1953. By the end of December 2007 however, tension resurfaced as North Korea missed its deadline to bare-all as promised its nuclear plans.

Got a daemon on your back? This is just the sort of thing that the religious is dogging at the upcoming New Line Cinema presentation of the "The Golden Compass" ("Northern Lights", in the UK). Based on the critically acclaimed legerdemain-themed trilogy novels of Philip Pullman collectively known as "His Dark Materials".
"The Golden Compass" stars Nicole Kidman, Sam Elliot, Eva Green, Daniel Craig and 12-year old newcomer Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra, out to save their world from evil tyranny - and so on ,and so forth. Its a "Lord of the Rings" meets "Narnia" meets "Harry Potter" with a sci-fi/fantasy aesthetic reminiscent of Naboo in the "Star Wars" movies.
Looking at the trailer however, it doesn't look at all like a Frankenstein-stitch-job of movie elements that sold in the past. The Golden Compass may just be able to stand on its own as the next big (although unfortunately not bigger, nor biggest) magical movie franchise.
So what's up with the daemons? In the film's parallel world, people's souls are hosted within their animal-spirit companions or "daemons". Children's daemons can morph according to the child's infinite potential then gradually settles to a particular form as one ages. If you want to know what sort of daemon you might have, head over to the resource link below and play a short game of 20-questions. My daemon profile is below. In the next few days, you can twiddle with it to confirm or change whether my daemon ought to be a "Xanthia".
Quite frankly though, I don't like spiders.
Anyway, here's a sneak peak at the majestic visual style of the movie.
"The Golden Compass" has evident anti-religious overtones, toned-down however compared to the books, despite the fact that its still basically a battle between good and evil story. Pullman is known to be a self-confessed atheist and some Catholic groups have called for a boycott of the film crying foul at the perceived intent to sell "atheism for kids".
Well, that's exactly what the religious groups bellyached before about the Harry Potter series. Let's see how far this "bad" publicity is going to buoy New Line's $200 million plus gamble.
Personally, I don't think one's faith should be affected nor determined by a 2-hour plus sitting in a dark movie house. If you seek to be indoctrinated, don't watch the movie. On the other hand, if you just want to be entertained, then just enjoy the film.
There's a bit of a name game going on with this movie production. Two Ian's, McKellen and McShane (two mac's at that too), are battling it out as the voices behind the armoured polar bears in the film. Then there's Richards - I mean, how many young girl actors may sport Dakota, of all the 51 US States, as their name? What's up with that?
"The Golden Compass" premieres at a Red Carpet launch in London's Odeon Leicester Square on the 27th of November. The film opens worldwide, December 2.
It's still a long way to go but Warner Bros. much gossiped cartoon-turned-movie "Thundercats" is already snarling, err - buzzing the Web wires. It hasn't even gone into production yet but already a lot of mixed reactions are being blown around.
The 80's cult cartoon creation by Rankin/Bass Productions have been rumored to be due for a Hollywood big-screen makeover as early as the late 90's. Thundercats is about a pride of humanoid-felines tasked to combat the evil mummy wizard Mumm-ra in order to save Third Earth.
Ok so that last description didn't sound really nice. But when you're 12 years old in the 80's tuned in to Saturday afternoon cartoons, watching the Thundercats in action was a pretty nifty treat.
Can Hollywood relive the wonder of those by-gone years? Exactly the argument of some disdained by big movie production outfits messing with what they would like to "preserve" in their childhood. Of course there are those who are just big fans of the series, eagerly awaiting the release of the film. For those unfamiliar with the Thundercats, it would be quite a novel experience. If you wish to brush up on your anthropomorphic lore, there's a wiki on the series that can serve as your reference.
If its any consolation to purists of the original cartoon show, WB reportedly dropped all plans for a live action production. So to those experimenting with the thought of Mel Gibson or Hugh Jackman sporting the red locks of Lion-O, scratch it.
The 2010 silver screen incarnation of Thundercats will be completely CGI animation ala "TMNT" (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) or the recent fantasy epic "Beowulf". And to conjure the computerized magic is seasoned video game director Jerry O'Flaherty. He's gonna need all of his Irish-descent luck to bring to life Paul Sopocy's script to a level that most, if not all, would-be Thunderians will watch and hopefully approve.
Have you ever had sleepless nights after watching a horror movie or reading a scary story? Well, there were some news stories on the Web last Halloween week that would certainly keep some people up at night.
"WRITERS' REVENGE" The Writers Guild of America have called for a strike as it demanded a "better share" of the revenue pie when it comes to works released on new media such as DVDs, the Internet and on mobile devices. It's certainly a nightmare for "talking heads" on television as they rely on members of the 12,000+ strong screenwriter's union to come up with the stuff that makes them "look good" on TV. The popular talk shows like those of Jay Leno, David Letterman and Jon Stewart, as well as comedy shows such as Saturday Night Live are the first ones to take a hit from the impasse as show producers refused to yield to the writers' demands stating that the issue on revenues from DVDs is a "roadblock to negotiations".
What's really scary about this situation? We're gonna be stuck with re-runs and reality shows until this whole thing boils over.
"THE MUMMY REVEALED" Although it would be nice to see another Brendan Fraser / Rachel Wesiz team-up for another "The Mummy" movie franchise, this isn't about that. The teen pharaoh circa 1333-1324 BC, in the mummified person of Tutankhamun, will be up for public exhibit at his tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings for the first time since the tomb was discovered 85 years ago. The body will be placed in a climate-controlled enclosure to ensure that tourists won't contribute to further damage at the archeological site.
All I can say is... the curse - remember the curse!
"ATTACK OF THE SUPERMOUSE" Faster and can run longer and farther than your average rodent, stronger appetite but weighs considerably less, able to give birth to what is equivalent to 80-years old in human age. It's Mickey, it's Jerry - no, it's "Supermouse"! Genetically modified mice were developed by a team of scientists at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio that has significantly increased ability and performance compared to regular mice. This gives rise to fears from those against transgenic experimentation of future abuse especially among athletes undergoing gene theraphy and similar human-applied scenarios.
One noticeable side-effect of the research - the supermice were more aggressive. This early on, please ban transgenics from the UFC!
"FALLING HOUSE OF CARDS" Now that would make a great title for a Grisham thriller. And with the past weeks' turmoil in the global banking sector it certainly serves as a grim backdrop for many a-worried investors. The credit market crisis is still in a downward spiral, as the top brass of such traditionally financial stalwarts as Merill Lynch & Co. and Citigroup, Inc. took early exits after their firms suffered "sickening" losses.
As regulators and financial companies struggle to overcome the slumping market, more heads may just roll.
Downey is poised to again showcase his versatility as an actor in what is set to be another blockbuster movie franchise from Marvel and Paramount. Question is - can the 40-something performer and known recovering substance-abuser capture the cult following of the Iron Man aficionados and sci-fi curious moviegoers in what is expected to be a grueling summer for movies come 2008?
From Marvel's official website, President of Production at Marvel Studios Kevin Feige said of Robert Downey Jr. that he is "an ideal fit to play such a complex character as Iron Man. We could not think of another actor better suited to bring one of Marvel's crown jewels to the big screen and be the centerpiece of our first independently produced feature."
Robert Downey, Jr. was nominated at the Academy Awards for his role in the 1992 film "Chaplin" where he acted out the life-story of the iconic silent-movies star. Controversy plagued the talented thespian during the late 90's as he was incarcerated several times for drug-related offenses. Notably, he came out in a guest role in the hit television series Ally McBeal where he was nominated for an Emmy and eventually winning an award in the 2000 Golden Globes.
Downey is also a recording artist having performed alongside Sting and Elton John. You can visit robertdowneyjrmusic.com for a sampling of his 2004 album "The Futurist".
Iron Man will be pitted against some very formidable opponents on screen as well as on ticket sales. The Summer 2008 line up will also feature "The Incredible Hulk", "Kung Fu Panda", the Will Smith starrer "Tonight He Comes", "The Dark Knight" with Heath Ledger playing the Joker, and last but certainly not the least, the return of the swashbuckling archeologist in "Indiana Jones - Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".
Iron Man opens May 2, 2008 in cinemas worldwide. See the official trailer at www.ironmanmovie.com.
"She comes with her own webcam.. built-in." JAMIE SOMMERS RETURNS TO THE small screen, this time with more bells and whistles (presumably) than her 70's incarnation as the "Bionic Woman". English actress Michelle Ryan will play the lead role for the remake vaunted as "the biggest television event of the year".
The NBC network seems to have radically upgraded the concept of the post-millenium Bionic Woman. No more Office of Scientific Intelligence (OSI), no more Oscar Goldman, no more bionic German Shepherd, in fact only the name Jamie Sommers seems to link the then and now. The Daily Mail quoted producers as saying that this is a "re-imagination" of the 1976 cult classic.
Lindsay Wagner played the original Jamie Sommers in "The Bionic Woman" for which she won an Emmy in 1977. It was a spin-off of the original bionic-themed show "The Six Million Dollar Man". Back then, Jamie Sommers was a professional tennis player who suffers a skydiving accident. Her old flame Steve Austin, played by Lee Majors, who happens to be wired to $6M worth (give or take) of bionic technology, pushes his secretive OSI employer to save Jamie's life. The bionic duo had since been running, albeit in familiar slow-motion style, in parallel adventures across American TV sets.
58 episodes and 3 made-for-TV reunion movies later, NBC revives the franchise in what is perceived to be a bid to stave-off its slipping network ranking. This time around, Jamie Sommers leads a troubled life as a college dropout-slash-barkeeper and caretaker to her teenage sister Becca Sommers (played by Lucy Hale). While that doesn't paint a pretty picture, she suffers a life-threatening car accident. Jamie's life is saved through bionics and now she has to repay the bill by defeating an earlier bionic experiment gone awry.
Now, I admit that's the ugliest blurb I've ever written. So just watch the preview video at NBC.com. No more slow-motion here. This seems to be a hotter, blurier, darker, action-packed "Bionic Woman" from the producers that gave you the critically-acclaimed remake of "Battlestar Galactica".
"Bionic Woman" premieres, September 26 primetime on NBC.
It was Television's biggest night but ever bigger for "The Sopranos" as the cast and crew took a few coveted Emmys in what seemed to be a night of tribute for the 10-year run of the recently concluded drama series. Ryan Seacrest hosted the 2007 Emmy Awards which were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Sunday night, September 16.
HBO, the home network for "The Sopranos", led over the ABC and NBC TV networks with a total of 21 honors since the Creative Arts Emmys last September 8.
This year's Emmys is also touted to be a first being an eco-friendly carbon-neutral airing of the awards show. The distinction comes as part of the "Green with Emmy" campaign aimed at reducing the carbon footprint the Primetime Emmy Awards have to the global climate. Coincidentally (or not), controversial environmental champion former VP Al Gore was present to receive an award for "Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Television". Mr. Gore along with co-awardee Joel Hyatt began the Current TV cable television network, which airs produced mostly by viewers themselves.
Compared to the results of the Daily Dotventures' Choose "Your Own Emmys!" poll, only the Sopranos win echoed the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards selections. This supports what I've long suspected - that bloggers and web users don't watch television anymore. :)
So here are the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' 59th Primetime Emmy top winners:
Last month we ran a poll for the "Daily Dotventures" community's own Emmy picks. Its a couple (of hundreds) short of an impressive turnout but there were interesting choices there. See the official tally below.
Ahem, and the winners are...
For Best Comedy Series, its a tie between "The Office" and "Two and a Half Men" with 3 votes a piece. Last year's winner was "The Office". Will it pull a two-in-a row win or will 2-1/2 men manage an upset this year?
For Best Actor in a Comedy Series, its Steve Carell with 4 votes. Tony Shalhoub, last year's winner for "Monk", comes in second.
For Best Actress in a Comedy Series, its yet another tie for Tina Fey in "30 Rock" and Mary Louise Parker in "Weeds". Emmy winner for 2006 Julia Louis-Dreyfuss in "The New Adventures of Old Christine" didn't get a nod from our voters unfortunately.
For Best Drama Series, "The Sopranos" led the polls overwhelmingly. Recent news have hinted that they would most likely be taking home the Emmy prize this year. In 2006, it was "24" that received the Emmy for Best Drama Series.
For Best Actor in a Drama Series, enigmatic James Gandolfini seems to be a runaway favorite. Lets see what "24" lead actor Kiefer Sutherland, winner in last years Best Drama Actor category, will have to say about that.
For Best Actress in a Drama Series, its going to be a close race between last year's awardee Mariska Hargitay of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" and Kyra Sedgwick for "The Closer".
Will the Choose "Your Own Emmys!" selections be the real winners on Sunday? Ryan Seacrest hosts the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards and its happening in just a few hours.
Young Emmy award winning actor Shia LaBeouf, who will be playing Indiana Jones' son in the movie, announced at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards the official title for the fourth sequel of the swashbuckling film franchise.
The eagerly anticipated installment to the blockbuster series will be called "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".
With Executive Producer George Lucas (alongside Kathleen Kennedy) and Steven Spielberg directing, the two famous filmmakers collaborate once more to tell the adventurous tale of one of Holywood's iconic characters. Harrison Ford, now in his senior years at 65, returns to don that old fedora hat for the role that probably made archeology a sexy career option when the first "Indy" film "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out in 1981.
In 1984, the prequel "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was released which featured Kate Capshaw (now Mrs. Steven Spielberg) opposite Harrison Ford.
The third Indy movie, released in 1989 as "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", was probably the most memorable of the first three films as Sir Sean Connery played Henry Jones Sr., father to Indy Junior.
Eighteen years after father and son Joneses rode off into the sunset with friends, we find Indiana Jones in yet another action-packed escapade, this time as the father to his son which will be played by Shia LaBeouf (that's Sha-ya Luh-Buff).
Flop or fly, I will not miss this movie event for anything. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opens May 22nd in 2008.
The 64th Venice International Film Festival came to another glitzy conclusion, September 8, with the film worlds' top honors awarded to some familiar illustrious names.
The envelope is open, the names are out, and the winners are:
Volpi Coppa for Best Actress - Cate Blanchett in "I'm Not There", a Bob Dylan biopic by Director Todd Haynes
Volpi Coppa for Best Actor - Brad Pitt in "The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" by Director Andrew Dominik
Golden Lion for Best Film - Ang Lee for "Se, Jie (Lust, Caution)"
Silver Lion for Best Direction - Brian De Palma for "Redacted"
Disney's "High School Musical" franchise was rocked by scandalous photos of their young leading lady, Vanessa Hudgens, which spread over the Internet last week.
The 18 year old actress-singer who is romantically linked to HSM co-star Zac Efron, apologized to her fans for "the situation" and expressed regret for producing said nude images. She also thanked the outpouring of support from family and friends.
Ms. Hudgens' official MySpace erupted with comments from supportive fans since the incident. Her reprisal of her role in an anticipated "High School Musical 3" is now in question.
Kids these days, eh. Young, passionate, carefree in glitzy, glamorous Hollywood.
Luciano Pavarotti, world acclaimed tenor and recording artist bowed a final farewell to opera fans worldwide sans an encore as he passed away earlier today in his hometown of Modena, Italy. He was 71.
The opera maestro was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006. His international farewell tour was canceled due to this medical condition. Concerns for his health resurfaced on entertainment headlines last month when he was rushed to the hospital with a fever.
While renown for his full voice and ability to hit incredibly high notes, Pavarotti is also credited for bringing opera out of the sole realm of classical purists and within the reach of the "pop" audience. He performed alongside such pop icons as U2's Bono, Sting, Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin, Sheryl Crow and the Spice Girls. One of Pavarotti's pet projects, Pavarotti and Friends, gives proceeds to various charity work.
He is also part of the legendary "The Three Tenors" with Jose Carerras and Placido Domingo. The trio's brand of classical music made an impact to millions of people around the globe. This also brought millions in profits from recording sales and concert tours which again brought the ire of "high society" snobs.
As of writing the official Luciano Pavarotti website simply shows the beloved tenor's picture with his characteristic perfect smile and an epitaph which quoted Pavarotti - "I think a life in music is a life beautifully spent and this is what I have devoted my life to."
One of Hollywood's popular actors Owen Wilson was reportedly hospitalized over the weekend in an alleged suicide attempt. Various reports indicate the 38-year old star of "Wedding Crashers", "Cars" and "Behind Enemy Lines", may have overdosed on pills and slashed his wrists.
Speculations arose as to what may have triggered the act, ranging from being upset over a fight with a "close friend", to a jealous fit regarding erstwhile girlfriend Kate Hudson. At this point, family and representatives of Owen Wilson downplayed any reference to the cause of Wilson's suicide try.
Latest reports say that Owen Wilson is in "good condition" and is recovering at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Wilson, through his publicist, requested for privacy during "this difficult time".
