Facebook Releases Searchable Public Profiles

Are you a Facebook user?

The fast-rising social networking site started to implement a non-member search of Facebook member profiles last Wednesday, September 5. Currently, the public search will yield the Facebook member's full name and photo, but according to the Facebook blog posted by Philip Fung, "you have complete control of your public search listing".

Furthermore, Facebook will be allowing these public listings to be available on search engines such as Google and Yahoo. The move, while bold and presumably calculated to further leverage the position of Facebook on the Web, is being questioned by privacy advocates. Recent statistics show that Facebook has gained 1% of total Web traffic with a membership of nearly 40 million worldwide. Facebook users are being notified to adjust their respective account's privacy settings.

For Facebook users, what do you think of this feature? How will Facebook's public profile search feature affect its members in the long run? We'll have to wait and see.
